Waste management services
Waste management services have been provided in the Parkes Shire for over a century. Under the Local Government Act 1993 Parkes Shire Council is responsible for the management of waste in the Shire, which includes a wide network of waste and recycling collection services and eight landfill facilities.
Parkes Shire Council operates eight waste facilities within the Parkes Shire. Council has established a controlled sanitary landfill site in Parkes, which has a projected lifespan of over 100 years. Other waste facilities are located at Alectown, Bogan Gate, Gunningbland, Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore.
Council has undertaken major upgrades to its waste services and facilities in the 2015/16 financial year and has commenced further upgrades at the smaller waste facilities in 2020, including fencing, locks and security cameras as part of the Parkes Shire Waste Management Strategy 2015-22.
Recent Waste Projects & Initiatives
Important waste initiatives have been implemented:
- Parkes Shire Council - ‘rethinking waste’ media strategy implementation.
- Construction of a new Waste Transfer Station at Peak Hill to provide enhanced services to customers, including undercover waste drop-off areas, new sealed roads, staff amenities and signage.
- Construction of upgrades to the Parkes Waste Facility, including a new weighbridge, gatehouse, drop-off facilities, signage and native vegetation plantings.
- Introduction of a three bin kerbside collection service to urban customers, which allows for substantial diversion of recyclables and organics from landfill.
- Environmental improvements (fencing and signage) to landfills at Bogan Gate, Gunningbland, Trundle and Tullamore.
Improved Waste Collection
Parkes Shire Council has joined with other local government authorities in the NetWaste region to deliver improved waste collection services to recover more recyclables and organic material from entering the landfill stream by implementing a three bin waste collection system. This is great for the environment, reduces waste and encourages recycling and it saves ratepayers from increasing costs associated with landfill.
