Submissions closed on 30 January 2025, 10:00 AM

Notice is hereby given that Parkes Shire Council, in pursuance of Section 162 of the Roads Act 1993, proposes to name the following roads as shown hereunder:

Proposed Names:

Eureka Drive - off Page Street, Parkes

Stage 2 of the Goldfield Estate subdivision, 'Eureka Drive,' continues the gold mining and discovery theme established within the estate. This follows earlier street names such as Fossickers Drive, Prospector Avenue, and Goldpan Crescent.

Buchanan Place - Off Old Pines Road

The subject land is situated on the Shallow Rush Gold Belt in Parkes, NSW, a few hundred meters from Back Trundle Road and adjacent to Cookapie Street. It is located near the site of the Buchanan mine, where the Buchanan Reef was originally discovered.

In recognition of the historical significance of the Buchanan Reef and its connection to the area. This name is particularly fitting as the road is located on the very property where the Buchanan mine shaft was sunk, an important site in the history of Parkes, NSW.

The Buchanan Reef, discovered in the late 19th century by the skilled miner Bill Haselhurst, was named in honor of David Buchanan, a prominent protectionist Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) and an esteemed circuit barrister of New South Wales. Buchanan's legacy, which extends beyond his contributions to law and politics, became intertwined with the rich mining history of Parkes when the reef bearing his name yielded substantial gold discoveries, contributing significantly to the economic development of the region.

Bill Haselhurst's efforts, leading to the discovery of over 6,500 ounces of gold from the Buchanan Reef, reflect the pioneering spirit and determination that characterizes the town's early settlers and miners. Naming the road "Buchanan Place" not only honors this important chapter in Parkes' history but also ensures that future generations are reminded of the resilience and ingenuity of those who helped shape the town's identity.

This name adheres to the principles of historical and cultural significance, aligning with the objectives of the Geographical Naming Board to preserve and reflect the heritage of local communities. Buchanan Place would serve as a lasting tribute to both David Buchanan and the mining legacy of Parkes, adding a meaningful layer of history to the area.
